The History of the Nam Knights of America MC
The Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club (MC) was founded in July 1989 in Carlstadt, New Jersey, by a small group of Harley-Davidson riding combat veterans. Led by Jack Quigley, a Vietnam War platoon sergeant and retired Undersheriff, they established the club to recapture wartime brotherhood and support veterans in need.
The Origin
A Unique Brotherhood
The founding members shared a distinct dual identity as Vietnam War combat veterans and law enforcement officers. When seeking a motorcycle club that honored their military service, traditional clubs rejected them due to their law enforcement backgrounds. Guided by the suggestion of an established MC, they created their own club. The name reflects this unique synthesis:
- "Nam" honors their service in the Vietnam War.
- "Knights" symbolizes their dedication to law enforcement and a code of protection.
Evolution and Membership Expansion
Though birthed by Vietnam combat veterans, the club adapted as the years progressed. To secure the club's longevity, membership parameters expanded. Today, the organization welcomes:
- Veterans from all military eras.
- Active-duty military personnel.
- Law enforcement officers, active and retired.
- Patriots, who are dedicated community members sharing the club's values.
Growth into an International Organization
What began as a single New Jersey parent chapter has grown into an international movement. The club now spans more than 80 chapters across multiple U.S. states and Canada. Depending on the chapter, organizations may operate under either 501(c)(3) charitable status or 501(c)(7) social club status. Across the organization, Nam Knights chapters have raised and donated millions of dollars to veteran causes, police charities, and families of fallen heroes.
The Legacy of the Patch
The club's colors and patch directly reflect its historical roots. The original founding patch features a large, fierce dragon holding the Vietnam Service Ribbon. As membership grew to include non-Vietnam veterans, the club introduced a new version of the patch featuring the dragon holding the American flag. Both versions remain important symbols of the club's heritage, honoring the sacrifices of veterans while representing the continued growth and evolution of the organization.
Local Spotlight: The Swamp Fox Chapter (Charleston, SC)
Bringing this international mission to the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Swamp Fox Chapter was officially founded on February 20th, 2015. Headquartered in the Greater Charleston area, the chapter was established to extend the club's footprint of support to the region's large population of military personnel, veterans, and law enforcement officers.
The Namesake
The chapter proudly draws its name and heritage from Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion, nicknamed the "Swamp Fox" by the British. Operating throughout the coastal swamps of South Carolina, Marion utilized cunning guerrilla tactics to protect his homeland, a regional legacy of fierce protection that the chapter honors to this day.
A Decade of Impact
Celebrating its milestone 10-year anniversary in February 2025, the chapter has become a staple of the Charleston community. Through major annual events, benefit rides, and community outreach efforts, the Swamp Fox Chapter raises crucial funds to support veteran aid groups, local law enforcement initiatives, and families of the fallen.
DISCLAIMER: The Nam Knights of America MC does not claim any territory, as evidenced by the "America" bottom rocker worn by members across the United States.
